Artist's Statement

Years ago a young woman asked, “Where am I to do my work?  Tucson? D.F.? The Bay area? Santa? The answer became clear. You are your own Teocalli, or house of God (Creator), to acknowledge in order to do your world’s work wherever you are.

Artists have the opportunity to express from their Teocalli and invite and welcome the viewer to meet and engage somewhere in the periphery of surrounding space and intention. Manifestations of evolved processes, messages, stories, or abstractions from the specific and the multitudes  of influences find themselves being put forth in the creative creation process.

While participating in a collective event, I experienced what I referred to as an "arco iris limpia" (rainbow cleansing)! It is such that at times , it is the intention as artist to offer a similar representation of the experience to the viewer.

Estrella Apolonia or Chalchiyolotl has been a danzante Azteca since 1977. She is an artist working in multi-mediums (mostly painting), works as a traditional herbalist as well as healing arts for well-being. She has worked with elders bringing the prophecies of the four directions to the people.

As viewer, you are invited to open the door of the Teocalli and visit  for a while. The work, mostly paintings, serves as the sharing of my house and some of the accompanying dreams and stories. Sparks of color held captive in time, represent the sensation of the story. Color quanta seeking relationships are offered to the paint surface as animated depictions and reflections of elemental forces of nature. Often times, the subjects are asking to be remembered.
Feeding is also a customary sharing in my house. The blending of paint is likened to the marrying of a recipe’s carefully chosen ingredients. When the necessary components of dualities and complimentary elements emerge, the result or goal is the visual food, in order to be given and received.
To be able to create and resolve the dualities and abundance that exists in the world today, at times feels like a luxury. It is however, not only important but also absolutely necessary. Conceptually at it’s core, is the work as an offering…  an ode to life, if you will. The possibilities that exist between the artist and the viewer is also a valuable key in the reciprocating cycle of life.
Today, many of the world’s prophecies speak of healing our personal house, our communities, and reconciling tribal histories. It is a time for acknowledgement of Universal truths, values, and respect. I believe that my work falls within this theme.
